PBL Teacher Mini-Grants

The San Leandro Education Foundation (SLED) has Teacher Mini-Grants available to help fund your Project-Based Learning needs. The application is SHORT and SIMPLE! Each school site receives an allocation based on enrollment and need. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2020, or until a site's allocation has been exhausted. Teachers are encouraged to submit their request early and may apply in the Fall for projects planned for the Spring.

Examples of previous grants include Math Geometry Kits for a classroom planning project, a visit from a professional beekeeper, a classroom set of novels, and tickets to a theater production For more information and to apply, visit Elementary Teacher Mini-Grants or Secondary Teacher Mini-Grants.

NOTE: If you plan on requesting funds for BART tickets, please be advised that SLED will only purchase student discounted BART tickets. BART requires 21-day advanced notice for these purchases so plan accordingly!

S.T.E.A.M. Labs

S.T.E.A.M. labs are dedicated spaces equipped with curriculum, technology, and supplies designed for hands-on science learning. FOSS Kits, created by Lawrence Hall of Science and approved as supplemental curriculum for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), form the basic curriculum. The FOSS kits are further enhanced with robust online teaching tools.

WHY are S.T.E.A.M. Labs Important

Studies show that hands-on learning is the most effective way for students to learn and retain science concepts. However, the time it takes to acquire materials, set-up, and clean-up experiments is often a barrier for teachers. The S.T.E.A.M. Labs and the lab coordinators, provide teachers with a highly-supported, ready-to-use solution.

WHO is benefiting from S.T.E.A.M. Labs

Currently, the labs are piloting at two elementary school sites in San Leandro USD: Garfield and McKinley. Each week, 868 students are receiving forty to fifty minutes of additional science instruction. Both schools have high-need student populations as defined by income level, English language learners and foster-youth status (McKinley 78%, Garfield 70%.)
