S.T.E.A.M. Labs

S.T.E.A.M. labs are dedicated spaces equipped with curriculum, technology, and supplies designed for hands-on science learning. FOSS Kits, created by Lawrence Hall of Science and approved as supplemental curriculum for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), form the basic curriculum. The FOSS kits are further enhanced with robust online teaching tools.

Why are S.T.E.A.M. Labs Important?

Studies show that hands-on learning is the most effective way for students to learn and retain science concepts. However, the time it takes to acquire materials, set-up, and clean-up experiments is often a barrier for teachers. The S.T.E.A.M. Labs and the lab coordinators, provide teachers with a highly-supported, ready-to-use solution.

Who is Benefiting from S.T.E.A.M. Labs?

Currently, the labs are piloting at two elementary school sites in San Leandro USD: Garfield and McKinley. Each week, 868 students are receiving forty to fifty minutes of additional science instruction. Both schools have high-need student populations as defined by income level, English language learners and foster-youth status.
