History
Union School, the school operated by San Leandro's first school district, Union School District No. 1 of Alameda County, was built in 1856. After the City of San Leandro incorporated, the district was dissolved and San Leandro Elementary School District established. A new school was built on the original site of Union School, at the corner of Clarke and Hepburn Streets in 1909 and named Lincoln School in 1909, which was torn down in the 1960s. Education of high school students then fell under the administration of the Oakland School District. San Leandro High School was built in 1949 and in 1952, the San Leandro Unified School District was formed.
Overview
San Leandro is very proud of its schools and the safe, inclusive learning environment that has been created for its students. The San Leandro Unified School District consists of 12 schools serving approximately 8,800 students in grades K-12. The District is organized into eight elementary schools (K-5); two middle schools (6-8); and one comprehensive high school (9-12) that is comprised of two separate campuses. The newest campus, which opened its doors at the start of the 2010-2011 school year, is a beautiful state-of-the-art facility for ninth grade students only.
In addition, the District has Lincoln Alternative High School with an independent study program serving more than 200 students; and a comprehensive adult education program, the San Leandro Adult School, serving approximately 4,000 people annually. Our students are taught by 500 highly qualified teachers and supported by 250 dedicated classified personnel. The 2010-2011 general fund expenditure budget is approximately $66.5 million.
Demographics

The District's student population is 39.7% Hispanic, 16.4% African American, 15.6% Asian, 13.1% White, 8.7% Filipino, 1.4% Pacific Islander and 0.4% American Indian.
According to the April 2006 Language Census, there are 37+ languages spoken in the homes of 49% of our students. 26% of San Leandro's total population of students are at varying levels of English proficiency and are classified as English Learners. While this level of linguistic and cultural diversity enriches our schools, it also presents challenges as we seek the most effective means for raising all students to high levels of performance.
DonorsChoose Projects
One of SLED’s goals is to serve as a bridge between resources and San Leandro schools. One great resource is DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help teachers and students in need.
Here's how it works: public school teachers post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscopes for a biology class. Then anyone around the country can donate to the project.
SLED is running teacher trainings at each school in San Leandro on how to use the DonorsChoose website. The aim is to increase the number of teachers using this program and the number of students benefiting from these donations.
As of November 2011, San Leandro teachers have had 167 of their projects funded! Click on the logo below to see current San Leandro DonorsChoose projects in need of funding:
